developing news out of san francisco this morning where tourists were attacked and robbed. right now we have new information from the san francisco police department. keira is live at the hall of justice. >> san francisco police are saying they are looking for a group of several men and women after attacking tourists late last night. we have video when a group of tourists were walking, apparently another group of people started a firefight with them. necessity stabbed one man and stole his cellphone. as his friend tried to help him another man was stabbed and their feel friends were beaten up. they are trying to piece the case. the robber escaped in a blue suv. >> there is significant amount

of evidence and obviously they are still collecting more. there were witnesses and evidence at the scene. i'm optimistic that it will be solved in good order. >> reporter: san francisco police unfortunately say saving they are seeing a lot of cases like this as we report crimes of opportunity for cellphones. fortunately the two men that were stabbed are being treated for non life-threatening injuries. they are looking for a group of hispanic men and women in their 20s that escaped in a blue suv after attacking tourists late last night. >> katie: new details on a breaking story we first brought you last night at 11:00. santa clara fire crews have managed to contain a house fire that had been smoldering for hours. firefighters had to work around

downed power lines and at one point they had to back up because of the danger. at one point the fire re-ignited. the house is now gutted and no injuries being reported. breaking news out of south africa this morning, nelson mandela is out of the hospital. he has been discharged as his holds has improved. south african president says he visited him on thursday and was told that complications from a lung infection is improving. he was diamd to the hospital on march 27th and has been hospitalized three times since december. >> a memorial to fallen officers in vallejo has been vandalized and police are asking for your help. the memorial was vandalized with silver paint. we had to block some of it because it contains an obscenity

>> i think if that person would to take a moment that the contribution made specifically to the youth of that community that person may they think twice about vandalizing the sign. >> katie: police may end up putting plexiglass to protect it. 41-year-old man from castro valley has drowned while swimming in kaui. he was clearings in distress and bystanders tried to save him. the waves were up to 25 feet. it's the 11th reported drowning there since the start of the year. >> a memorial concert for the victims of oikos shooting will be held tonight and will feature moz art's requiem.

>> the music school has struggled to recover ever since. the confessed shooter has been ordered to undergo treatment at napa state hospital. the memorial concert is at 7:00 at st. paul's church in oakland. oakland police say a burglary suspect shot by an officer on friday was carrying a fake gun. sky7hd was over 34th street where police say they encountered two armed suspects. one had a knife and the other was carrying an authentic looking pistol. he is recovering from his wound. it's the second involved shooting on an oakland police officer in the past week. >> the family of a paramedic who died last week says quinn boyer continues to save lives as an

organ donor. john alston has the latest. >> reporter: mary of big brothers and big sisters new quinn for three years. she is the one that matched him up with his little brother who is now 14. >> he truly cared and wanted to give back. >> the santa clara county paramedic volunteered and had just been accepted in the physician assistant program in stanford. they decided to donate in his organs, his passing leaves a gash in our hearts. we ask for your supported and prayers. on tuesday morning, boyer was shot and killed on kemler avenue the victim of a possible robbery attack. he fired at off duty paramedic. a neighbor says there has been a

rash of violent crime in the neighborhood. >> there has been other incidents, they pistol whipped i am, things like that. >> people are traveling in cars and stopping them. we haven't had anything like that. we think it's an isolated event. >> there is a memorial at the ambulance company in san jose. arrange little are being made for his little brother to attend the funeral. >> i can only imagine what his brother is going through right now. they were close. >> reporter: there is a $10,000 reward. police had an elderly witness early on but that did not pan out. they do have shell casings from the scene which they hope will lead to the killer. >> katie: big step will be taken to construct the transit center. they will be installing a

died when a suicide bomber detonated a car in a southern province just as the u.s. convoy passed by. the u.s. military says another american civilian died in an insurgent attack in eastern afghanistan. we'll keep an eye but 6 americans, killed in attacks in afghanistan this morning. also, welcome to the neighborhood. santa clara city leaders are considering a massive entertainment district across from the new 49er stadium. they report hotels, restaurants, retail and residential homes are all on the table for the 230 acre former landfill that is currently a city owned golf course. they will consider developer with global developer and he would have five months to analyze the potential. president obama's $100

million initiative to research the human brain is being hailed as a first. a man whose wife has a brain disease, the president's proposal is big deal. more from mark matthews. >> reporter: he says $100 million will help find ways to prevent things like alzheimer's and epilepsy. >> we can study particles smaller than atoms but unlocked the mystery of matter that sits between our ears. >> the chairman of neurosurgery and challenge to researchers will lead to a better understanding of how parts of brain interact. >> we know what areas work together, say in the normal function and then when there is a disease like alzheimer's, we can understand which piece is not fire. >> reporter: to illustrate. he shows me a picture of a brain

has been somewhat busy. it is picking up some rainfall and moisture in the air but a lot of it is not making it to the ground. the rainbow in ukiah and we're getting light rain falling over parts of the coast in the north bay. san francisco had about hundredth of an inch in the last six hours. other reporting stations not getting much rainfall at all. you'll find some light rain over highway 1, marshal, south of tomales bay. low clouds over the golden gate bridge and fog along the coast with some possible drizzle. currently 54 in san francisco, 59 in oakland and 49 in santa cruz. also other parts of the bay area around the 50s as well. we are looking live from the east bay towards treasure island in san francisco so just a lot of grey skies.

you can expect for today, spotty showers mainly during the morning hours. more showers early tomorrow morning and then warming up starting on monday. if you you headed to the game. giants game at 1:05 today, sprinkles are possible but really not likely at this point. temperatures right near 60 degrees throughout the game. here is why. let me show you the satellite. we have an area of low pressure to the north. this storm, we're getting the very tail end, south end of this storm. that is why we're seeing a few sprinkles possible. as more storms move through to the north of the bay area. a somewhat unsettled pattern through sunday but the forecast models is showing less and less rain. we'll take you there later. light showers over san francisco and parts of peninsula while all along the coast with areas of

darker green showing slightly more rain but still pretty light at this point. mostly cloud cover for everyone and breaks in clouds with sunshine and possibly a shower in the afternoon in the santa cruz mountains. clouds move begin overnight bringing us another chance of rain and showers. early sunday morning we're seeing rain north bay, north bay coasts. then after that, lunchtime tomorrow looking pretty good and dry, but we will see breezy conditions tomorrow afternoon. highs today, very narrow band of temperatures right near the 60s, 63 half moon bay, to 70 in concord and san jose. here is the accu-weather seven-day forecast that we've got the sunny showers this morning. a chance early tomorrow morning, warming up monday and then -- look at those temperatures climbing up into the upper 80s wednesday. a lot of sunshine for you. dry for the workweek. >> katie: it's illegal to talk to the cellphone while driving in california but a new study shows the laws aren't working. u.s. department of transportation, about 660,000 drivers are texting, tweeting or occupied with their cellphones behind the wheel. according to a national highway traffic safety administration survey from 2010, there is little evidence that distracted driving has decreased in the past three years. the poll surveyed 600 people aged 16 and older. >> an event in san francisco has been drawing hundreds of struggling homeowners with the promise of meeting their lenders

face to face. jonathan bloom explains why events like this are still in demand as the economy recovers and why they are so effective. >> reporter: rachel is hanging on by her fingernails. it's no mystery why she is having trouble making payments. >> how much has the economy impacted your income? >> tremendously. >> adjustable rate mortgage borrowing from family after wells fargo refused to modify her loan. that is why she came to this event in downtown san francisco. >> a lot of folks have tried and failed on their own with their lender and didn't get anywhere. >> a spokesman says the biggest mortgaged lenders are ready to meet withburyers face to face. they have made agreements to lower interest rates for borrow there's prove they can't pay.

now, the key to the success is binding agreement that has some of the biggest banks requiring them to negotiate with their borrowers. how they got the agreements could be called a bit unorthodox. this is video shot three years ago when maca marched on chase's bank. >> it's not easy. we fought the banks in court and on the streets to get the deal for homeowners. >> they have been doing these events for several years but now they are seeing a different kind of problem. >> my house is under water so the bank is not going to give me a lower rate. >> she can't afford it now the bad loans have dragged the economy down. >> interest rate is 5.5. >> it can lower the rate sometimes down to 2%. >> if you have all the documents there is a great chance you can walk out of here with a lower

novato reporting no rain. hoe clouds and grey skies as you can see from coit tower. what you can expect the showers diminish and chances later on in the morning. temperatures in the mid 50s. afternoon, upper 60s and sunshine a little bit of it. this evening, partly cloudy, temperatures dropping to below 60 and more rain and even another warmup in the forecast. >> katie: it's been months in the making, next wednesday governor jerry brown will make his first trade trip to china. experts are going with him. sergio quintana says the governor hopes the state will be able to cash in billions of dollars in new exports. >> when the governor makes his trip to china next week, california wines will play a central role in all the dinner events planned. napa and sonoma wines are recognized as best in the world. in china they are still

relatively unknown. >> there are all things about california we are fourth largest wine producing region in the world. >> they recognize the golden gate bridge and disneyland and all the signature industries will be part of the governor's delegation of more than a hundred people that will be traveling to several cities in china including beijing and shanghai. it's another chance to make further inroads there. >> it's a high gross market. they are starting to afford luxury items and we want to make sure that california wine is part of that consideration. >> reporter: many chinese tourists discover wines when they visit but wine growing has a lot to do with china because two other countries dominate the market. >> that would be france number one and australia number two so the rest of us are in pack. france has been active in the

china market for very long time. >> a series of lunches and formal dinners will be a major part of this trip. some of them serving as many as 500 guests at a time. right now, there are hundreds of cases of california wine being shipped to china to accommodate those events. >> katie: the government of north korea is advising foreign officials to evacuate their embassy staff saying their safety could be at risk. they confirmed it and russian advisories have been warned. notification was made in event in conflict on april 10th. government issued the advisory as the u.s. monitors two medium ranged missiles are being moved to the east coast of north korea. >> president obama was raise money in san francisco and now he is prepared to send his new budget to congress.

he says it balances the need for deficit reducing spending cuts with investments to create american jobs. >> my budget will reduce our deficits, not with aimless, reckless spending cuts that hurts middle-class families but through the balanced approach that the american people prefer and the investments that a growing economy demands. >> the republican response by kansas governor calls for spending cuts and program reforms that focus on reducing the deficit. >> state attorney general pamela harris has accepted an apology that made a comment that some people thought were appropriate. he said she was by far the best looking attorney general in the country. the state's commission on women is glad about the uproar. >> the look takes away from the

accomplishments. you can be very accomplished but your looks make it that much better or that much worse. you don't have to deal with that. >> katie: others would say it would be too bad if men felt they couldn't compliment a woman's looks. >> now to a crime that is on the increase throughout the bay area. it's a simple as it is diabolical. someone knocks on your door and if you do not answer you are next victim. in this case the crime was caught on camera. nice reporter vic lee has the story. >> the security video shows a woman with an infant in her arms appearing te front door. she knocks and rings the doorbell. the homeowner says a nanny is in the house but does not answer because the woman is a stranger. she peers through the window to see if anyone is home. two men appear in the back of

house after jumping a fence. video shows them trying to pry the sliding glass do door from the tracks. they are having no luck. they suddenly dash off. they are apparently startled by the nanny who looked out the window. motels later one of intruders who has taken his hat and shirt off, jumps over the fence in the yard again. he left something important. homeowner says it looked like a radio scanner. police spokesman.... >> fortunate that somebody was home and basically scare them away. they took off and ran. >> he says it may have turned out differently if the intruders actually got into the house and confronted the nanny and child. >> a 14-year-old boy was shot and killed in such an incident. >> he says there is not only gang activity and burglaries but

a rash of other crimes in this development of over hundred homes. >> i don't know of a home here that doesn't have at least one car that hasn't been broken in to. >> home burglaries have increased 22% from the previous year and the numbers are still rising this year. >> the increase this year has been 13% compared to the same time last year. >> the nanny in that particular incident called the homeowner and the homeowner then called 911 and police did respond immediately. now, we did check with other cities in the bay area and it appears that these home burglaries are on the rise elsewhere. >> katie: it's 8:37. still ahead, sending a message of their own. how neighbors are trying to catch whoever made off expensive signage. spayed or neuter or what snels dog owners are fuming in one

>> katie: new this morning, riverside county authorities are considering mandatory spayed or neutering of pit bulls. there has been an increase in pit bull mix attacks on people. some people are in favor of the policy and others think their decision should be made by pet owners. >> from leaders at the county level, they are frustrated that too many people are getting hurt seriously, some almost near death. they are frustrated.

>> the owner's consideration to make that decision. >> katie: animal control authorities have long advocated altering all dogs because it makes them less likely to roam. >> proof that people will steal anything and signs encouraging people not litter. it happened in the diamond district and from 3535th to just beyond fruitvale. this is surveillance video. it happened 2:00 around tuesday morning. suspects are driving a gray van and they stole three community litter signs. the man that captured the vootd video took his evidence to oakland police. >> i turned the information over and filed a police report on behalf of the diamond aprove. association that owns the banners. it's been turned over.

>> katie: welcome back. it's 8:44 on a drizzly saturday morning but this is a live look at san jose. folks down there already seen partly sunny conditions. frances dinglasan says it probably won't get any more rain down in the south bay this morning. good news if you have outdoor plans and you wanted to stay dry. you are looking at 53 degrees right now. >> chevron has been given the go ahead to restart a damaged unit at richmond refinery. last august a massive fire destroyed an essential crude distillation unit at the refinery and the company has been running it at reduced capacity ever since.

end of june appears to be the restart date. >> an unprecedented amount of cruise ship mishaps have been happening the last six months. how is the industry doing? michael finney has this report. >> reporter: it's hard to forget these pictures of the carnival triumph or the conditions that passengers were forced to endure. in this home video caught the horror and panic aboard the costa con disorder yeah. >> people were pushing and it was chaotic. >> editor in chief of cruise.com. >> there are concerns to travelers that are new to cruise will have about cruise vacations. >> mimi is the owner of moraga travel. she is baffled. >> what is the deal? >> despite these cruise issues, americans and bay area residents in particular are not foregoing

depending on where you are waking up there is a whole different thick out there weather-wise. >> rain in some areas and sunny conditions in others. we will take you to live doppler 7-hd to show what you happening. there is a areas of light green, showing you light rain, sprinkles and drizzle. it's coming from the west affecting the north bay. not much in the south bay at this point. not much more expected. we're going to head to the north bay, right now we have some light shower activity heading toward pelt lime and novato. so far, olima reported hundredth of an inch and that is kind of rainfall we are talking about. golden gate bridge, grey skies and fog along the coast. sigh the moisture and little drops. san francisco currently at 54. oakland at 59. san carlos at 55.

temperatures are mild all in the 50s. a lot of grey skies over most of bay area as we look toward the bay bridge, folks are heading into san francisco, currently 54 in santa rosa where fog has developed. union city, maf. main store for today, spotty showers, that is only during the morning and mainly for the north bay. more showers expected early tomorrow morning. it will warm up monday, a big warmup coming up mid-week. i'll show you that as well with the seven-day forecast. if you are heading to the game today at at&t park, it starts at 1:00, temperatures in the low 60s. sprinkles are still possible but looking less likely. tomorrow we'll see a similar pattern, as well. few storms moving north of the area. getting the tail end of this and bringing the chaps of sprinkles to the bay area. northern california getting more of the rain. then we have an unsettled

pattern through sunday as more storms move west but to the north of bay area. we'll see the south end of the storm. a little bit of light rain, 9:00 right around the bay. parts of peninsula and even 10:00 along the peninsula coast, light showers and sprinkles. a lot of cloud cover. check it out, sunny conditions in some areas, possible showers in the santa cruz mountains and then dry conditions through the arise of the saturday. overnight into tomorrow morning we could see showers develop once again through the north pay and coast. then clearing out late morning into lunchtime. for today, look for highs to near normal. low 60s to just about 70 degrees in a lot of locations. 63 hoof moon bay, 68 in oakland, 70 in concord and tonight's lows will be mild, as well. upper 40s to mid 50s around the bay area. here is the accu etdz weather
